Choosing a Shower Waste

At Plumb-Warehouse, we pride ourselves on advising customers and answering their questions. It is this level of service that sets us apart from our competition. So this means we are very aware of customers’ concerns. In this blog, we address one set of common concerns – choosing a shower waste. So you’ll be fully briefed to be able to buy your shower waste online from Plumb-Warehouse.

The humble shower waste—also known as a shower trap—is responsible for more than just draining water. It prevents odours from the sewer system from entering your home, it prevents small things – like jewellery – being washed away and, with modern high-flow designs, ensures your shower tray doesn’t become a swimming pool.

Choosing the right shower waste is critical for the long-term health and efficiency of your shower. Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know.

Are Shower Wastes Universal?

The short answer is no, they are not universal. While many wastes look similar, they are designed to fit specific hole sizes on your shower tray. The two most common sizes are:

  • 90mm: This is by far the most prevalent size for modern, low-profile, and slimline shower trays. The larger diameter allows for a much higher flow rate, making it the perfect choice for powerful and high-pressure showers.
  • 50mm: While less common for new installations, this size is still used and may be what you need if you are replacing an older waste. Despite its smaller size, modern 50mm wastes are surprisingly efficient and can handle high flow rates.

It’s crucial to check the diameter of the waste hole on your shower tray before you buy, as a mismatch will prevent a watertight seal.

What Are the Different Types of Shower Wastes?

Beyond their size, shower wastes come in different types, each with its own purpose:

  • Standard Wastes: These are the most basic and common type, suitable for most shower trays. They are typically made of plastic or chrome-plated ABS and offer a standard flow rate.
  • High-Flow Wastes (or Fast-Flow Wastes): This is the best option for powerful showers. Designed with a larger internal diameter, they can drain water at rates of 30-50 litres per minute. That is faster than shower heads, so they prevent water build-up in the tray, even with high-pressure systems. They are essential for low-profile trays where any pooling of water would be immediately noticeable.
  • Low-Profile Wastes: These are a subtype of high-flow wastes, specifically designed for ultra-slim shower trays. They require very little space beneath the tray (sometimes as little as 40mm) and are perfect for a sleek, minimalist installation.
  • Wetroom Wastes: Designed for wetroom floors, these are integrated directly into the subfloor and are typically linear (channel drains) or central point drains. They require a different installation approach than a standard shower tray waste.

Matching Your Waste to Your Other Bathroom Fittings

Most wastes are sold with a chrome finish. You can either buy a waste with a different finish, or you can buy a cover only to change the finish.

Different Brands?

For a standard 90mm waste, you do not need to buy a waste from the same manufacturer as the tray. You might have limited space or a high-flow, high-pressure shower system where a different waste is a better choice.

For wetrooms however, the wastes and the wetroom floors are often designed to be used together.

At Plumb-Warehouse, we sell shower wastes from several manufacturers, including Arley, Barber Wilsons, Geberit, Just Trays, Kudos, Laufen, MX Shower Trays, Traymate and we also sell our own Plumb Warehouse branded wastes.

In conclusion, the right shower waste is a small investment that makes a big difference. By understanding the types and sizes, you can choose a waste that allows your shower to drain perfectly, looks great, and remains a hygienic, hassle-free space for years to come. And of course, you can buy shower wastes online from Plumb-Warehouse!
